Author Guidelines

JAIHL welcomes original research articles, systematic reviews, methodological and technical papers, and short communications that apply artificial intelligence, machine learning or other data-driven methods to genuine healthcare, clinical or life-sciences problems. Please read the Aims & Scope before you submit. Every submission is screened by the editorial office and assessed by an editor, and suitable manuscripts are sent for double-anonymized peer review.

Article types and length

• Original Research Articles: up to 6,000 words excluding references, with an abstract of up to 300 words.
• Review Articles (systematic or narrative): up to 7,000 words. Systematic reviews follow PRISMA 2020.
• Methodological and Technical Papers: up to 5,000 words.
• Short Communications: up to 3,000 words.
• Editorials and Perspectives: invited or proposed, and may receive editorial assessment rather than full external peer review.

Preparing your manuscript

• Structure: title; structured abstract (Background, Methods, Results, Conclusion; up to 300 words); 3 to 6 keywords; Introduction; Materials and Methods; Results; Discussion; Conclusions; References; figures and tables with captions.
• Submit the main file as .docx or .rtf. Provide figures as high-resolution, separate files where possible (for example .eps or .tiff).
• Format references consistently in APA (7th edition) or Vancouver style.

Anonymization. JAIHL uses double-anonymized peer review. Remove names, affiliations, acknowledgments and identifying file properties from the main manuscript file, and give them on a separate title page. Links to code or data repositories shared for review must not reveal your identity.

Reporting standards for AI/ML research. If your study develops, trains or evaluates an AI/ML system, follow the applicable standard and upload the completed checklist: CONSORT-AI (randomized trials), SPIRIT-AI (trial protocols), TRIPOD-AI (prediction models) or CLAIM (medical imaging). Report your datasets, model architecture, performance with uncertainty estimates, external validation, and subgroup performance and potential bias where permissible. Data, code and reproducibility. Every manuscript must include a Data Availability Statement. Sharing code, and trained model parameters where permissible, is strongly encouraged. Identifiable patient data must never be shared openly.

Ethics and consent. State the ethics committee and approval number, or the documented determination that approval was not required; informed consent where applicable; and the data-use agreements for any secondary or public datasets. Prospective clinical trials of AI interventions must be registered in advance. If your study evaluates a system that is marketed or seeking regulatory clearance, disclose its regulatory status.

AI tools. AI systems cannot be listed as authors. Disclose any material use of generative AI in preparing the manuscript, including text, figures, images or analysis, and identify AI-generated or AI-enhanced images in the figure legend.

Preprints. Preprints on recognized repositories are permitted. Give the preprint DOI or URL when you submit.

Authorship and contributions. Authorship should reflect a substantial intellectual contribution. Describe each author's role using the CRediT taxonomy.

Funding and competing interests. Disclose all funding and any competing interests, including relationships with companies that develop or market technology evaluated in the study.

Fees. There is no charge to submit or to have a manuscript peer reviewed. An Article Processing Charge applies only to accepted articles, with waivers and discounts available for eligible authors. See the Article Processing Charges page.
