Peer Review Process

Peer Review Model

JAIHL employs a rigorous double-anonymized peer-review process, in which the identities of both authors and reviewers are concealed to ensure objectivity and fairness. Complete anonymity cannot always be guaranteed, particularly where a preprint is publicly available.

Stage 1 — Initial Editorial Screening

Typical duration: 3–5 business days. The editorial office assesses completeness, compliance with journal policies, relevance to scope, anonymization, and similarity screening for potential plagiarism.

Stage 2 — Editorial Assessment

The Editor-in-Chief or an assigned Associate Editor evaluates originality, scientific quality, ethical compliance, and methodological rigor. Manuscripts that do not meet the journal’s standards may be desk-rejected at this stage.

Stage 3 — Peer Review

Manuscripts deemed suitable are sent to a minimum of two independent external reviewers with relevant expertise. Reviewers are allocated 7 days to accept or decline a review invitation, and 21 days (3 weeks) to submit their evaluation. Reviewers declare any conflicts of interest before accepting an invitation.

Stage 4 — Editorial Decision

Based on reviewers’ reports, the handling editor makes a decision within 7 days of receiving the reports. Authors receive one of the following, along with anonymous reviewer comments and editorial guidance: Accept; Minor Revisions (14 days to respond); Major Revisions (28 days to respond); or Reject.

Stage 5 — Revision and Final Decision

Revised manuscripts are evaluated by the handling editor and, when necessary, returned to the original reviewers. Once accepted, article layout, formatting, and online publication are typically completed within 7 to 10 days.

Typical Timelines

These are planning estimates, not guarantees: first-round peer review typically 3–4 weeks; average total time from submission to online publication typically 6–8 weeks.

Peer Review Exceptions

Editorials and invited perspectives may receive editorial assessment rather than full external peer review, clearly identified as such.
